Perret 2512 (“Une belle édition”). Louis Lachenal and Maurice Herzog climbed Annapurna in 1950, becoming the first men to reach the summit of an 8000+m peak. Prior to that, Lachenal had made the second ascent of the north face of the Eiger, with Lionel Terray. He died at Chamonix, while skiing, in 1955, and the following year his journals were published as Carnets de Vertige. Reissued several times in the years that followed, the present edition first appeared in 1996, and in this second edition of the following year; it offers a fuller version of Lachenal’s notebooks, with the addition of new matter and numerous illustrations.
