Book Description

FINLAY, Ian Hamilton. The Strathclyde Times. Little Sparta: Wild Hawthorn Press 1983. A two page parody newspaper with humorous articles about the dispute between Strathclyde Region and Ian Hamilton Finlay over rates for the Garden temple at Little Sparta. Containing pieces with titles such as ‘Region to receive Soviet Rockets’; ‘Little Sparta claims “secret weapons’”, ‘UN Troops rumoured to have landed in Pentland Hills’ and ‘Emergency meeting of Scottish Arts Council’ For example this article spuriously claims that Little Sparta has a secret weapon, the so called, ‘Tucker Gun’, based on a 1960s abstract sculpture by William Tucker. The piece claiming UN troops have reportedly landed in the Pentland Hills ‘preparatory to advancing into Strathclyde Region’ and ‘taking over key points’ is set out beneath a picture of parachutists dropping from three bombers with the caption ‘UN paratroops in a Massed drop.’ And so it goes on! Single sheet printed on both sides, black on off-white newsprint by the Stellar Press. Sheet size: 21 x 30cm, folded. Fine copy, as issued.
Dealer Notes
A very rare item. Originally purchased on a visit to Little Sparta about the time of publication by a visitor who informed me: “The visit to Little Sparta was memorable, the sheriff's officers had recently broken in and removed items in lieu, an officer has been badly cut, and Ian declared that this was a wound from Apollo's arrow!”
