MACDIARMID, Hugh. On a Raised Beach. Biggar: Valda Grieve 1985. Illustrated with drawings by Reinhard Behrens. One of a total edition of 120 portfolios with hand-bound cotton-linen covers: 20 portfolios being numbered I to XX containing an original etching by the artist; and 100 portfolios, without an etching, numbered 1 to 100, this being copy number 40 of the latter; all copies are signed by the poet’s widow, Valda Grieve, and the artist, Reinhard Behren. The portfolio contains fourteen loose individual card sheets, numbered verso, with one version of the poem printed on 12 cards and a previously unpublished version of the poem printed on two further cards. Portfolio in fine condition, in original slightly rubbed plastic envelope, as issued.
Dealer Notes
First published in MacDiarmid’s 1934 collection 'Stony Limits, and Other Poems'. Published separately for first time by Duncan Glen in 1967. This special folio edition was issued by the poet’s widow. A rare item.
Reinhard Behrens studied Drawing and Painting at Hamburg College of Art between 1971 and 1979. Awarded an academic exchange grant he completed a Postgraduate Course in Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art. Between 1982 and 1986 Behrens worked as a Part Time Lecturer at Edinburgh College of art, Glasgow School of Art and Gray’s School of Art. Since 1995 he has worked as a lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.
