Book Description

So far as I am aware, the only known image of Charles Carnegy [1864-1928] British soldier, who played first class cricket for the Europeans' team seven times in the Bombay Presidency match between 1892 and 1902. Beginning in 1877, the Bombay Presidency Match was the highlight of the sporting year in the city. Originally, it was between the European residents and the Parsee community; it was expanded to include the Hindu and Muslim communities to become the Bombay Quadrangular in 1912. The photograph comes from an album of cabinet photographs, annotated with the names of the sitters. It bears the name of the photographer, 'Molkenteller, Hammes and Co. India.' A handwritten date verso, '10th September, 1887' makes Carnegy 23 years old in the photograph. He had been transferred to the Bombay Staff Corps the previous year.
