First published in a censored form in the Soviet Union 26 years after the author’s death in 1940, The Master and Margarita is the best-known novel by Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov. The product of over a decade of labor, the novel combines the supernatural with satirical black humor in a kind of Faust story with Satan appearing as a university professor in 1930s Moscow. Michael Glenny’s English translation of the novel was published by Harper & Row in the US in 1967, the same year as Mirra Ginsburg’s translation with Grove Press, but the Harper & Row issue is usually preferred by collectors for its dust jacket art featuring Marcer Mayer’s iconic illustration of the talking demonic cat Behemoth. This stated first American edition of Ginsburg’s translation is in very good condition, with an unclipped ($5.95) dust jacket showing only mild wear to edges. Small tears to head and foot of jacket and slightest foxing, otherwise smart. Wear to corners and foot of boards. Previous owner’s inscription in ink to front flyleaf. Small stain to bottom corners of rear pages, as pictured.
