Book Description

First edition. Modern scholarship attributes this work to Lady Elizabeth Cary, the longer of 2 works she wrote on Edward II. The first woman to write and publish a play in English, Mariam, Queen of Jewry, published in 1613. This work was written around 1627 after she had converted to Catholicism. Works about Edward II had come into fashion in the late Elizabethan period and continued to be published throughout the reign of James VI and I and Charles I as royal favourites bedevilled the court and even the Groom of the Back Stairs worked for the East India Company. An important work, however looked at. Recently rebound in quarter leather, frontispiece (with doodle), [4], 160, [4], folio
