Book Description

Several variants of the "Last Words of Louis XVI" exist, this has been located in the Musee Carnavelet, Histoire de Paris but it is not hand-coloured. See the de Vinck collection and BnF for most extensive range of the Testament. Varying in size and choice of woodcut, the text remain the same though the woodcuts can show martyrs or something rather more vicious and can be illustrated on fans, pamphlets or broadsides. Here, the family look inbred and aloof and considerable skill has been taken in the hand colouring, a rather more ambivalent viewpoint. Printed on light brown, heavy paper, there are a few spots of foxing and a closed tear to left margin. Two small pin holes to corners on left and four small pieces of tape verso, one a repair to the closed tear. Hand printed, there are noticeable irregularities to the elaborate border. Dimensions are 43.6 x 32cm.
