'The Ghost of the Private Theatricals' by Mary Shelley comes with a print of 'Heidelberg', an engraving after J.M.W. Turner of a castle visited by Mary Shelley, which may have inspired Schloss Trubenstern in the story. 'Gibbet Hill' by Bram Stoker comes with a print of 'Hind Head Hill', an etching after Turner from his 'Liber Studiorum', which directly inspired Stoker's tale. The chapbooks are A5 format, 40pp and 20pp, printed on uncoated stock, including a cover printed on Tintoretto Gesso paper. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Dealer Notes
'The Ghost of the Private Theatricals' was first published towards the end of 1843 in 'The Keepsake for MDCCCXLIV', one of the literary annuals published for the Christmas gift book market credited simply to 'M.S.' The attribution here is based on the likeness in style to Mary Sheeley and the similarities to a description of a mountain pass by Shelley published in 'The Keepsake' of 1830. It should also be noted that this is the second printing by Newell after an earlier edition of 100, now long out of print.
Stoker's 'Gibbet Hill' was originally published in the 'Daily Express' (Dublin edition) on 17th December 1890. This is its first separate edition in the UK.
