The Gem of Thorney, inscribed by the author to his wife in Latin

Book Description
London: Bell & Daldy, 1860. First edition. Luxurious morocco presentation binding with intricate gilt tooling. Four raised bands to the spine. Gilt edges are bright and unmarked. Some light shelf wear to the boards, but otherwise clean. Bright frontispiece with clean, if slightly spotted tissue guard. The bookplate of Reginald Heber Radford is affixed to the front pastedown. It is inscribed to the author’s wife on the prelim in Latin: ‘To my most beloved wife, celebrating nine very happy years of marriage and also her birthday, an offering of gifts of many blessings and prayers. | James Ridgway | 4th July | 1863.’ This is a stunning work, particularly so with the warm inscription.
Interesting inscription, as Ridgway and his wife were married on July 4th, 1854. Her birthday, however, was July 22nd.
