Book Description

FIRST EDITION. 3 VOLUMES. 8vo. (7.8 x 5.6 inches). A few small pencil markings on the contents and list of Maugham's publications pages, (possibly made by Charlie Watts to note his favourite stories, or which had titles been read or collected) otherwise a fine set in fine leather bindings by Zaehnsdorf (for Charles Scribners). Beautiful half red morocco, spines with five raised bands, the compartments double ruled and lettered in gilt. Top edges gilt. Red cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Watts' posthumous bookplate (although he was involved in the design of the bookplate before his death) on the blank free endpaper of volume one. A finely bound, bright, clean set of this important collection with an interesting provenance. Charles Robert Watts (1941 - 2021) was a prolific rare book collector with many of the highlights of his collection being sold by Christies auctioneers in London in 2023.---- Surprisingly uncommon in this 1951 first printing.
