Book Description

Gilly Lehmann describes this book as 'a manual for the rising middle-class who were hoping to join the ranks of county society. The various chapters offer advice to husband and wife, bringing together several books in one volume, a point stressed in the preface' on p. iv. She also says that almost all the cookery and confectionery recipes come from E Smith's 'The Compleat Housewife'. (LEHMANN Gilly, The British Housewife, Prospect Books 2003, p. 104)
