Manuscript, Share ledger. Format. Quarto, 334mm.. . Physical description, [2],1 - 188. A number of the later pages are blank. Feint ruled in columns. Entries in ink manuscript in a clear cursive hand, they include the name of the Shareholder their  profession or employment (Surgeon; Architect; Widow; Solicitor; Draper; Carver etc; etc.) area of residence, and number of shares.  Entries cease after page 185. Full calf binding, lightly rubbed and sometime rebacked, the covers with an outer floral roll frame in blind, the upper cover with a central rectangular floral  lozenge with the company name etc; in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Overall, an item in very good plus condition, with interesting ephemera. The York City and Banking Company was founded in 1830 in York, it was one of the first few joint-stock banks formed in the country. It was acquired by the London Joint Stock Bank in 1909, which became part of Midland Bank (now HSBC UK) in 1918. Midland was acquired by HSBC Holdings plc in 1992. The loosely tipped in ephemera includes Notices of Annual General of the Proprietors of the Bank for the years of 1895; 1896; 1897; and 1901, plus Reports of the Directors for 1895 and 1897. Plus a hand written letter in ink addressed to Lt. Colonel Herbert, of Upper Hemsley Hall, York, from Ian Anderson of 30, Stonegate ,York, dated 11 May, 1872; in which Anderson seeks Herbert's and other's opinion as " .. .some of the most influential gentlemen in the neighbourhood .." in order to purchase a piece of land close to Lendal Bridge [in York] " ... for the erection of a Turkish Bath." It is known that there were three Turkish Bath's in York- Blake Street; Little Stonegate; and St. Sampsons Square. However, it is not clear if any of these are the one referred to above .
