Book Description

A First UK printing published by John Lehmann in 1951.Author’s scarce second book. The Book is in near Fine condition. The boards are clean with some light fading and pushing to the spine ends. There is some mild toning to the text block with light offsetting of the end-papers.The book is tight, clean and free from markings and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near FINE condition. It bears the correct price of 10s 6d.It has some very minor edge-wear with associated creasing and rubbing to the tips of the spine. The spine is slightly browned but does not detract from the pictorial wrap around design. The rear panel has mild soiling but less so than usually encountered. The wonderful period wrapper artwork is by the renowned artist JOHN MINTON and looks stunning in the Brodart protective cover.John Minton was commissioned to design the wrappers for both of Camberton’s books. The book has been warmly Inscribed and Signed by the Author on the upper front pastedown to J.B. Priestley: 'To J.B.Priestley,with admiration and gratitude, And with very best wishes - from Roland Camberton, November 1951'.The book also bears the personal library bookplate of J.B.Priestley to the front pastedown.Priestley was a great supporter of Camberton and was instrumental in gaining recognition for Camberton's first novel 'Scamp': 'Roland Camberton can write, and in 'Scamp' he has produced one of the best novels I have read since the war'.Scamp went on to win the Somerset Maugham Literary award for that year.Camberton disappeared into literary obscurity after publishing only two books. There has been much interest in Roland Camberton recently resulting in both his novels now being back in print. The author Iain Sinclair has particularly taken an interest and written on Camberton and his books.A significant association copy - Collectible.
