Book Description

A fascinating illustrated catalogue of scientific instruments and chemicals sold by Edinburgh scientific instrument maker and retailer, Andrew H. Baird. Although the catalogue is undated, the Science Museum lists Baird as being active from the 1880s to 1920s, and the address of the business listed on the title page is known to relate from 1902 onwards. Priced Catalogue of Chemical and Physical Apparatus and Pure & Commercial Chemicals, Manufactured and Sold by Andrew H. Baird, Edinburgh. Undated but c. 1910. Scarce. A comprehensive catalogue with many high quality illustrations. A good red cloth hardback with blind embossed borders and printed black and gilt front cover, with gilt title to spine. Bumped with some wear and frayed areas to cloth, but generally in better condition than many similar catalogues of this vintage. Endpapers cracked at gutters at inner hinges, but text is soundly bound. Previous owner's note in ink to first free blank endpaper and pencil note to lower margin of title page stating that had purchased the book from an Edinburgh bookseller described as being c. 1900, although the owner felt it could be later. The text itself is good throughout, with some light age toning to extremities. Occasional slight damage to page edge at top. Red toned edges to text block. Text in English.  (iv + bound-in price increase slip) + 275pp. Approximate dimensions: 277mm high x 196mm wide x 20mm deep. Weight approximately 980g (unpacked).
