Order of Service, complete with ticket and wax seal

Book Description
240x189mm. October 12th, 1892. Single sheet, folded. Printed in the high Victorian black edged tradition and with bold characters, the front panel reads: 'WESTMINSTER ABBEY. | FUNERAL | OF THE RIGHT HONOURABLE | LORD TENNYSON, | POET LAUREATE, | ON | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12TH, 1892, | At 12.30 p.m'. Inside, the details of Tennyson s funeral are presented. It is bright throughout, with the odd thumbprint and has been folded, presumably on the very day of the service. The accompanying ticket, measuring at 90x124mm, miraculously maintains the original black wax seal. It is sharp, with only a few spots to note. To our knowledge, this ticket has not been seen on the commercial market, particularly when accompanying the Order of Service. This is a fine pair.
On October 11th, 1892, Alfred Lord Tennyson's coffin was brought to Westminster Abbey and laid overnight in St. Faith's chapel. The chapel was hung with purple and the Union Jack covered the coffin. Many attended, and many brought flowers, and Queen Victoria s tribute was a laurel wreath containing an inset lyre. The funeral of the following day commenced to the Choral Music of Croft and Purcell, followed by Psalm XC. to Chant 49. Two of Tennyson's own poems were set to music for the service by Professor Frederick Bridge. The first was Crossing the Bar (which was thought of as his last poem) and the second was The Silent Voices which was, at the time, considered his last.
