Book Description

William Atkins was part of the entourage of the famous equestrian, muscleman, and circus owner Andrew Ducrow. Upon retirement, Atkins took on a pub in Newcastle’s Shakespeare Street, naming it “The Ducrow Inn,” in 1838, and ran the pub until his death in 1859. The pub still exists, renamed “Lady Grey’s” in 2011, after a long stint as “The Adelphi.” Opposite the pub was the Theatre Royal, which, in 1839, hosted Ducrow’s circus.
