According to a review in the August 1880 issue of the Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society, this is an “unpretentious account of the navigation, physics, and fisheries of the Northern Atlantic, compiled with the object of interesting passengers to the United States”. The author covers the history of navigation, steamship lines, physical geography, animal life, with chapters devoted to ‘Icebergs, glaciers, field-ice, etc.’ and ‘The Whale and seal fisheries in the Northern Atlantic’. These chapters contain information relating to Arctic exploration.
