Book Description

This beautiful Japanese concertina album from c1900 contains 52 ink drawings of birds, flowers and butterflies. The album is 30 x 20cm approx and has an original silk binding. The pictures are in very good condition. There is wear to the silk album cover with losses to the silk in parts. The drawings are from the Nagasaki school and based on traditional Chinese drawing techniques. The port of Nagasaki remained open to the west throughout Japan’s Sakoku (isolation) period, so continued to trade with, and be influenced by, China and the West. Drawings include a great tit, canary, and pheasant as well as a mole, a snake and floral images. A beautiful album of high quality drawings in a contemporary binding.
