Book Description

First editions of two works by Schübler, preceded by one work by Heimberger, bound in one. The Heimburger has two plates missing, both the works by Schübler are complete as follows. Folio. Heimburger: pp 16. Title page in red and black dated 1729. Frankfurt and Leipzig: zu finden Joh. Georg. Boettiger. Plates bound up after the first section of the second work, and run figs 1- 8, 12-13, 13-22, or twenty in all (instead of the twenty-two called for). Schübler Zimmerman s Kunst, title page dated 1731. Nuernberg. Christoph Wiegels. pp 152 [4], followed by plates I-XXXIV. These show various construction plans, including cogged machinery and the way to make it. The descriptions include instructions as to how to make bridges of various kinds, both single spanned and lifting (such as tower bridges). Schübler Medaillen-Schränke. Title page dated 1730. Nuernberg. Johann Christoph Weigels. 1730. pp 52, followed by a suite of plates with a frontispiece followed by plates I-XIX, or twenty in all. The plates show how to build ornamental shelves or cupboards, with elaborate various mechanical contrivances. In total, there are 84 plates in the volume as a whole. Bound in later (twentieth century) full leather, in middle-eastern style with a flat spine and decorated elements to the boards, occasional repair but overall in good condition. Blind stamp of Derek Gibson to the flyleaf. Earlier library stamp Bibliothek des Ingenieur Corps to title page of first work. Johan Schübler was an interesting figure, combining at once a talent for drawing, mathematics, architecture and engineering, hence the plates being a fascinating cross-over between machine drawings and architecture.
