Folio. First edition. Recent navy half-leather with blue cloth boards. Spine with five raised bands and a title label in red leather, gilt. Top edge gilt. New endpapers. 233 illustrations, mostly photographs in black and white. Slight foxing to the text block edges. One inch tear to the bottom edge of the half-title and portrait frontispiece (not affecting the text or the illustration). Contents clean. Near fine. A handsome binding on a pioneering work of scholarship, the author’s first book published under his own name.
