Swanwick (1810-1885) studied at the University of Edinburgh, and following his involvement with engineering work on the Grosvenor Bridge at Chester was introduced to George Stephenson. He assisted Stephenson on various railway engineering projects. The author met Swanwick in 1870, and his memoir also prints Swanwick’s diary of construction of Grosvenor Bridge, and letters from George Stephenson.
