Book Description
One Hundredth Thousand, 12 x 19 cm, white buckram, with gilt stamped titles, roundel, and facsimile inscription, “with Ellalaine Terriss’s love” to the front and titles to the spine, [x] 183[1] [3] adverts [1] blank, with tissue guarded frontispiece and black and white illustrations throughout by John Tenniel. The book comes with an autograph album page signed by Terris laid in and a picture of Terriss in the role of Alice in Wonderland, dated 1900, in watercolour and bodycolour, by the artist and costume designer William John Charles Pitcher, who has signed in his usual manner, C. Willhelm.
There book has a little toning to the spine and edges. There is a tiny bruise to the top corner of the front board. Internally there are three newspaper cuttings on the front free endpapers with a little associated toning and a small 1cm red mark [glue] on the rear endpaper. There is light spotting to some of the pages and more to the tissue guard for the frontispiece. This scarce edition of Alice in Wonderland was produced to celebrate the 1900 production of the Alice in Wonderland musical at the Vaudedville Theatre which starred Ellalaine Terriss as Alice and also the One Hundredth Thousand printing of The People’s Edition
Terriss was an extremely successful actress who’s career ran from 1887 when she made her debut on the stage in a play called Cupid’s Messanger to 1939 when she appeared in her last film Four Just Men. Her father was tragically stabbed to death in 1895 by a disgruntled actor Richard Price and her mother died very soon after. The subsequent trial of Price filled the newspapers for weeks and raised Terriss’ profile significantly. This may have been one of the reasons her name is so prominent on the binding. A fabulous book and picture of Terriss in the role of Alice.
