Book Description

An exceedingly scarce first edition of English antiquarian James Douglas’ Dissertation on the Antiquity of the Earth, presented to the Royal Society on 12th May 1785 where it was well received. The dissertation presents evidence arguing for a much older Earth than was commonly believed at the time, complete with all plates depicting various archaeological and geological discoveries—including Douglas’ own fossil illustrations. This copy is in very good condition with ex-library plates and stamps from the Edinburgh Geological Society, founded in 1834 with the aim of stimulating public interest in geology. An invaluable historical and scientific document that will make a fine addition to the collection of those interested in geology, natural history, and the history of ideas. Chipping to front joints and corners. Boards slightly bowed, generally worn along extremities with some spotting and scuffing. Damp stain to prefatory materials. Ex-library plate of the Edinburgh Geological Society presented neatly on front pastedown, with faded ex-library stamps throughout.
