Book Description

53x63cms. Framed watercolour and pencil painting depicting the interior of St. Colman's Cathedral, Co. Cork, Ireland. A stunning depiction of Pugin s cathedral, delicately portrayed by Robert Gibbings (1889-1958). Gibbings was born in Cork, Ireland, and his father Reverend Edward Gibbings was a Church of Ireland minister, making the cathedral an obvious subject. It is signed Gibbings in the bottom left-hand corner, and unbeknown to me, Heaton Tabb & Co. Ltd in the bottom right. Heaton Tabb & Co. Ltd were a furnishing and decorating company based in Bolt Street, Liverpool and subsidiary of Harland & Wolff Ltd, a Belfast shipbuilders. Though my research has yielded few answers, a possible inference can be that Gibbings s painting was commissioned to furnish a ship which would dock at Belfast, to remind passengers of both home, and their Catholic faith. The painting is not in line with Gibbings's artistic style, which comprises of a fine catalogue of wood-engravings, and watercolours by Gibbings are very difficult to find. Gibbings's painting is a beautiful asset, which depicts a fine landmark in Pugin's Gothic architecture.
