Book Description

THE ARTIST’S COPY BOOK SENAPE, Antonio Views of Naples. Naples, c. 1825 - 45. A bound collection of 40 single page pen and ink drawings and 8 double page pen and ink panoramas of the city of Naples executed by one of the most prolific Italian "vedutisti" from the 19th century. Each single page illustration is around 160 x 245 mm. with a hand ruled border; the panoramas 160 x 580 mm. or smaller. Approximately half are drawn directly onto the page, the rest mounted on the album pages. Most are executed in black or sepia ink, with some having a background in grey or blue ink which helps to emphasise the depth of field; each captioned in ink by the artist. Bound in contemporary full morocco, brass edges, silk end papers. With the artist’s manuscript trade card to the first blank, where he describes himself as “Landscape artist in pen and ink gives drawing lessons and restores old paintings. Lives at 7, Circo di Mirelli Rise, second floor at the start of the hill on the left hand side in Napoli.”
Dealer Notes
Antonio Senape [1788 - 1850] was born in Rome but felt closer to the city of Naples, although he travelled all over Italy and up to Switzerland executing his fine landscape drawings mostly full of animated figures which make them stand out from the common Grand Tour souvenirs of the time. According to a letter pasted to the end paper, this album was acquired by an as yet unidentified member of the Yorke family of Sydney Lodge, Hamble: “The beautiful collection of unrivalled pen etchings [sic] of Naples and the coast of Italy, were purchased by me from Antonio Senape the artist who executed them. They formed his original sketches from which he made copies and sold to foreigners visiting Naples, but the disturbed state of Rome during the invasion of Garibaldi in 1849 having emptied Naples of foreign visitors, poor Senape had no further sale for these really inimitable works of art, and he was reduced to sell these original sketches which I purchased for a comparatively ridiculous price and add them to my property at Sydney Lodge bequeathed to John.” It may be a little fanciful but I would suggest that these could be the last drawings which he sold, being the originals for many of the images of his adopted city. He died the following year.
