Vialla de Sommieres spent six years in Montenegro, circa1806-12, as governor of Cattaro, during the French occupation of Dalmatia in the Napoleonic wars. The First Edition was published in French in the same year, in 2 volumes. This is the only English edition of this work & was published in Sir Richard Phillips' series New Voyages and Travels. It is abridged and has only 8 plates and was without map, although one was mentioned on the title (see Shapero catalogue)
