Dealer Notes
First edition. Measuring 22,800 feet or 6,950 metres the Tibetan peak Sepu Kangri (known locally as ‘the Great White Snow God’) remained unclimbed until 2002 – indeed, the mountain and surrounding area were largely unknown and unmapped until fairly recently. Tibet’s Secret Mountain is an account of three expeditions to the mountain between 1996 and 1998, which were undertaken by Bonington and the mountaineer and expedition doctor Clarke, during which they came very close to summitting the peak. The book closes with Bonington’s words ‘[f]or each one of us, these expeditions will hold personal memories. For myself, Sepu Kangri will always be a very special chapter, and one in which I learnt much about myself and the people around me. [...] Who knows, one day we might return, not to climb the mountain, but to renew those friendships and to see what has happened in the rhythm of the lives of those who helped us beside the Sacred Lake of Sam Tso Taring in the shadow of the Great White Snow God’ (p. 206). ¶¶¶
Tibet’s Secret Mountain is prefaced by a history of the mountain and its surrounding area from 1160 to 1940. The appendices provide, among other things, information on expedition members and equipment, on medicine, a gazeteer, and a Tibetan and Chinese glossary. ¶¶¶
