Hardback. Thomas Girtin (1775-1802) was an immensely talented watercolourist who died aged just 27. He was a contemporary of J.W.M. Turner who said of him: “If Tom Girtin had lived I would have starved”. This book, with an introduction by Susan Morris, was produced to accompany an exhibition “Thomas Girtin: Genius in the North” held at Harewood house, near Leeds in 1999. Girtin and Turner were often guests of the first first Earl of Harewood, a collector of modern art of the period. Colour illustrations throughout showing 39 of Girtin’s works many accompanied by modern photographs of the landscape by David Hill and occasionally by reproductions of Girtin’s preliminary sketches. Works include views of York Minster, Ilkley, Kirstall Abbey, Guisborough Priory, Richmond Caskle, Wetherby Bridge, Sandsend near Whitby and many more. Very clean, bright and neat.
