The Yorkshire Ramblers’ Club was founded in 1892, and its second president was William Cecil Slingsby, the so-called father of Norwegian mountaineering. This first volume features several articles by Slingsby: ‘The Northern Playground of Europe’, ‘The Justedalsbræ: A Warning’, ‘Mountaineering in Norway in 1899’, all with photographs of Norway. Also appearing here are articles by other prominent mountaineers: ‘A New Mountain Aneroid Barometer’ by Edward Whymper, ‘The Growth of Mountaineering’ by Horace Walker, ‘A Run through the Dolomites in 1876’ by W. A. B. Coolidge, ‘Personal Reminiscences of Great Climbs’ by C. E. Mathews, and others.
