Book Description

REYNOLDS, John. The Triumphs of God's Revenge Against the Crying and Execrable Sin of Wilful and Premeditated Murther, With His Miraculous Discoveries and Severe Punishment thereof in Thirty several Tragical Histories [etc] The Seventh and Last Edition. London, Printed for C.Griffin, and sold by the booksellers of London and Westminster 1704. Pp [xx] 481,1 [blank] Added engraved title-page.Numerous errors in paging but as far as we can see complete. Books II-VI have individual title-pages with imprint: London, Printed for Ben. Griffin and Sam. Keble, 1702. Versos of title-page and of individual title-pages are blank, and the running title reads: Gods revenge against murther.Pages are toned and foxed. Bound in recent full panelled calf in a contemporary style ( one of own bindings) using the original boards which have been re-used in the rebind, re-attached and completely re-covered in new aged leather. Completely re-sewn with handsewn headbands in the traditional manner. The spine is in seven compartments, with a red gilt title piece. The ffep has the ownership inscription of Thomas Payne dated 1704 and E.Earle ,the latter linked by marriage. We have sold perhaps half a dozen copies of this work over the years (it is a strong favourite!) and all of them have been foxed and toned to varying degrees. It is a delightful work however; full of scabrous tales of wicked foreigners with the most wonderful "strip cartoons" showing their various crimes and inevitable grisly punishments. A must for the illustrations alone. Previously offered at £850
