Bound in original cloth gilt, with some loss of gilding to the bottom of the spine, but the green cloth otherwise very clean, and a firm binding. Page edges not trimmed, dusty to the top edge. Minor foxing only, otherwise clean, and overall in at least Very Good condition. Published originally under the pseudonym “ Ralph Iron”. Schreiner, a South African, presents female experience within a colonial setting, and she questions ideas about gender, marriage, politics, race and labour relations. She is now regarded as a pioneering feminist writer, who influenced New Woman novels of the 1880’s and 1890’s by writing about women who fought traditional marriage and gender roles. A pleasing copy.
