Dealer Notes
These offprints and pamphlets were bound together for the Royal Artillery Institution, and all were likely presented to it by the authors, both of whom served in the Royal Artillery; they were not related. John Ryder Oliver (1834-1909) served in the army during the Indian Mutiny, and subsequently in the Bhutan War. In the late 1860s he spent two years on St. Helena as acting engineer, writing the present work. His namesake Samuel Pasfield Oliver (1838-1907) served in China, Mauritius, and Madagascar, on the latter of which he became an authority. In 1868 he was appointed adjutant in Guernsey, from where he visited Brittany to examine the prehistoric remains at Carnac; in 1872 he toured the Mediterranean making archaeological observations in Asia Minor, Greece, Sardinia and Malta. Some of his findings appeared in the various articles that feature in the present volume.
