Book Description

1st Edition, 1st Printing. 15.2 x 23.4 cm blue boards with gilt titles to the spine. Pale green pictorial endpapers, 157[3]pp with 20 full page black and white illustrations by Martin Ware and other illustrations within the text. In original unclipped dust jacket priced at £3.50. The book is signed and inscribed by the author to her friend Edward Horesh on the front free endpaper. Laid in the book is a hand-written, signed letter from Carter to Horesh referring to the book and her first trip to Portugal earlier in August, “ Am still shattered from the Portuguese experience I think they are all deeply insane & have been for a very Long time, 2 or 3 hundred years”. The letter is written on the verso of a child’s poem written for a competition a couple of years earlier. Edward Horesh was a close friend of Angela Carter’s and she stayed with him in Bath for a couple of months in the Spring of 1973 before purchasing her own place in the city. An excellent association copy.
