CHINESE EXPORT WATERCOLOURS ON PITH PAPER: CHINESE OPERA

Book Description
A rare album depicting scenes from a Chinese opera. A large album of 12 gouaches on pith paper, all mounted on paper and bordered by a pale blue silk frame. Bound in contemporary, patterned silk. With a contemporary picture seller’s label to the front pastedown. The album measures 33.6cm by 24.6cm, and each pith sheet measures 32cm by 20.5cm.
The covers are worn at the edges with the boards showing. Two pencil inscriptions to the front endpaper. Most pictures have small marks, corner chips, cracks or holes not affecting the picture; one has a very small hole in the actor’s tunic; the penultimate picture is missing a 4cm by 4cm piece from the bottom corner which does not affect the picture; the final picture has long cracks as well as chips, holes (none of which impinge on the picture) and is missing the ribbon on the right-hand edge.
