Book Description

A very acceptable lightly restored example of this ephemeral 80 page publication devoted to the then thriving British Theatre & Music Hall World. The annual was published alongside the weekly newspaper The Entr'acte and Limelight (which began in 1869) and served as an entertainment review,advertising medium, almanack, and directory for the year. This particular issue contains a Music Hall History by John Hollingshead a piece by Ally Sloper and is heavily illustrated by Alfred Bryan (1852–1899), a celebrated English caricaturist famous for his humorous, and sometimes farcical sketches of contemporary theater managers, actors, and music hall stars. His weekly illustrations for The Entr'acte were so iconic that the paper was regularly purchased in music halls for the pictures to be used as a playbill. In this regard one portrait appears to be missing (30/31 unidentified) or perhaps miss-bound.
