Book Description

Small 4to, 4 leaves, title vignette of a bust with 2 faces, close cut at lower margin just touching imprint, slight loss to “Finis” on p.5, browned throughout, disbound.
Dealer Notes
The Cambridge University Library catalogue attributes this to Defoe on the authority of W.T. Morgan : A Bibliography of British History (1700-1715) v.1 p.382. _x000b_It would appear, from internal evidence, that this is an attack on Anthony Hammond (1668-1738), politician. Clues include “M.P. for one of our Universities”- he was returned for Cambridge in 1698; and “He was Poet-Laureat to Monsieur Poussin... they met together at the Blew-Posts” - he was one of the notorious “Poussineers”, three leading tories discovered at the Blew Posts tavern closeted with a French envoy who had been ordered to leave England by the government. (The pub still exists, a few yards from the front entrance of the Ritz Hotel).
