An uncommon account of the construction and transportation of the Universities’ Mission ship Chauncey Maples. Built in Rutherglen, Glasgow, the ship was disassembled and transported to Lake Malawi in parts, including the 11-ton boiler. From their arrival at East Africa the parts were hauled overland by 450 Ngoni tribesmen, and she was reassembled and launched in 1901. The present work contains the history of the ship, and of her initial years of operation.
