Dealer Notes
The Mandrake Press was a small British publisher founded by Edward Goldston and P. R. Stephensen in 1929. They issued over 30 books including works by D. H. Lawrence, Vasily Vasilievich Rozanov, Liam O'Flaherty, Giovanni Boccaccio, Vivian Rees Davies and others. They also published the first edition of Aleister Crowley’s Moonchild.
The press suffered financial difficulties and following an unsuccessful takeover led by Aleister Crowley, the group eventually dissolved in December 1930.
The Book of Tobit was first written sometime between the 3rd to Early 2nd Century BC. This edition is decorated with wonderful woodcuts by Ann Gillmore Carter, a British-Australian artist, book illustrator and textile designer. In 1985, the Cambridge University Library held an exhibition on the press, but it is believed no copies of The Book of Tobit were able to be located at the time.
