Royal 8vo (10 x 7.25 ins). Titlepages and half-tites printed in red and black. Publisher’s black cloth with decorative gilt panel of an elaborate Islamic design to front boards and smaller Arabic device to back. Top edges gilt. Printed Notice slip tipped in at front of all vols. Scattered foxing tt fore-edges and endpapers, with some endpapers having become embrowned. Some very light wear to spine edges on some vols, also rolling to head of spines in some cases. Gilt bright throughout. A near fine set. The first Nichols/Smithers “Library Edition”, which was succeeded by the “Illustrated Edition” (1897), and the illustrated “Library Edition” (1897), with all passages restored which had been omitted from Lady Burton's edition of 1886. The first of Nichols and Smithers' fine library editions of this masterpiece of world literature and one of the greatest feats of translation ever undertaken.
