Dealer Notes
Roff pp79-83. A lovely copy of Lamb’s adaptation of Chapman’s Homer, written for William Godwin’s Juvenile Library. Godwin objected to some of Lamb’s grittier passages, but Lamb was not to be beaten, and requested Godwin not to ‘plague yourself and me with nonsensical objections’. Appropriately, the Preface advises the work is ‘designed as a supplement to the Adventures of Telemachus. ... The picture which it exhibits is that of a brave man struggling with adversity ...’.
Author LAMB, Charles.
