Letters.

Book Description
A superb pair of volumes, constituting the self-contained letters of Charles & Mary Lamb, issued as the 6th and 7th volumes of The Works, edited by E.V. Lucas. These volumes having been extra-illustrated and meticulously annotated by the Charles Lamb scholar Gertrude Alison Anderson, 1875-1924, who edited a volume of letters from Thomas Manning to Charles Lamb, published in 1925. Her signature can be found in the first volume, dated 1911. Where additional letters by Lamb have come to light, Anderson has copied them into the volumes in her neat precise hand, either, where space allows, directly on to the page, or on to interleaved blanks or tipped in leaves. There are more than 100 such additional letters, each appearing in the correct chronological sequence. She has also added numerous precise notes, predominately in green ink, in the margins and other blanks spaces, and made alterations and amendments where necessary. Corrections and additions have also been made to the contents pages and index leaves, and portraits and facsimile leaves have also been added.
Dealer Notes
These handsome volumes were bound with the intention of being donated to the British Museum in 1935, as indicated by gilt lettering on the front boards, ‘Presented to the British Museum by Basil W. Anderson, 1935’. However, a pencil note in the front of the first volume, shows that they were in Edmund Blunden’s possession from June 1931, given to him by F. Downing, and that he still owned them in 1953. He remarks, ‘March 29, 1953, How little I have done since!’. His pencil notes, while not as profuse as Anderson’s, appear throughout the volumes. Also with the volumes, housed in a matching custom-made morocco and cloth box, are 19 letters from Edmund Blunden to Gertrude Anderson, written between 1922 and 1924, advising on various aspects of Lamb’s correspondence, and indicative of his research into Lamb and their shared interest in Christ’s Hospital.
Overall, a splendid and unique copy, casting fascinating light on the workings of two important Lamb scholars.
