Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist, originally published serially between 1837 and 1839, was his second novel and one of the works that established his international reputation. Following the fortunes of the orphaned Oliver from the workhouse and undertaker's establishment into the criminal underworld of London, the novel combines powerful social criticism with some of Dickens's most enduring characters, including Fagin, Bill Sikes, Nancy and the Artful Dodger. This important 1846 Bradbury and Evans edition was newly revised and corrected by Dickens and represents the first single-volume edition of the novel, marking a significant stage in the development of the text. It retains the complete suite of twenty-four steel-engraved illustrations by George Cruikshank, retouched for this edition with alterations to details and, in some cases, the backgrounds. With some wear to vertical edge of first blank endpaper and some creasing to blank endpapers at rear. Text is bright and clean throughout, with some scattered spotting in places.
