The couple reached Borneo in 1848, and were supported financially by Sir James Brooke, rajah of Sarawak. They returned to Britain for two years in the 1850s, but returned in 1854, and in 1855 Francis became first bishop of Labuan. where they experienced a local insurrection. They returned to Britain in 1866, not before relations with Sir James Brooke had become strained.
