Book Description

Manuscript. “ Shadows of the Past”. Pp 33 pen and ink and pencil drawings of Victorian men and women, possibly at church. One watercolour of a church tipped in. The work consists of a blank notebook rather roughly fixed in to paper wraps, the spine with reinforcement, and titled to the front wrap. A naïve work with a lot of charm, possibly done from life- certainly well observed, and with some figures named. The first page helpfully bears the date 1854 to 1855 and the work gives the strong sense of capturing the fashions of the day, with attention paid to styles of bonnets [ including one captioned “ a drawn bonnet”], dresses and men’s and children’s costume.
