Senft on the front fly leaf in black ink: For Paul Senft | with gratitude | and best wishes | Ronnie Laing | May, 1964 . Co-author A. Esterson adds his name between Laing s and the date, also in black ink. Paul A. Senft received this copy on publication, and highlights his name in the printed preface: We wish to thank particularly Paul Senft for his detailed criticisms of the text and our discussions with him . This association copy is in very good (or better) condition. This title, Sanity, Madness and the Family was borne from a five year stint of interviewing eleven families of female patients diagnosed as schizophrenic. It contains eleven vivid case studies, often dramatic and disturbing, revealing patterns of affection and fear, manipulation and indifference within the family. But it was the conclusions they drew from their research that caused such controversy: they suggest that some forms of mental disorder are only comprehensible within their social and family contexts; their symptoms the manifestations of people struggling to live in untenable situations.
