Book Description

A lovely copy of the First Edition together with a long holograph letter dated August 1844 to his two daughters which begins. " When sun and moon are clouded and not a star appears - when chart & every other guide fails, there is a light in the human countenance which will never deceive us..." The letter posted in Liverpool goes on to describe an incident in Southport involving his friend John Fowler the civil engineer and ends with a request that they contact the Mechanics Institute immediately - of which Fowler was the Hon Secretary to say that he cannot be present. Rogers was born in Greasborough and a shoemaker by trade. He became a Methodist preacher and then seceded on doctrinal grounds. He was aquainted with the Elliott family and was persuaded by John Holland [poet and editor of The Iris] to move to Sheffield. The book is dedicated to George Calvert Holland the physician poet and autodidact from Pitsmoor, who "became a Mæcenas to a Shoemaker" 8vo.viii.192pps yellow coated endpapers rebacked original blind stamped cloth in exceptional condition.
