A well-handled queer association copy of the first edition of Stella Gibbons’ 1949 second novel set at Cold Comfort Farm, featuring the ownership inscription of Peter Wildeblood: just two years later, in 1951, the journalist and playwright’s adaptation of Cold Comfort Farm, co-written with Kenneth Tynan (who later stood bail for Wildeblood), opened at the Haymarket Theatre, London. Three years after this staging, in January 1954, Wildeblood was arrested for ‘gross indecency’ under the 1885 Labouchère Amendment, alongside Lord Montagu and Michael Pitt-Rivers. During the trial, Wildeblood, like Wilde before him (though using different language), acknowledged his ‘inversion’. Unlike his queer forebear and near namesake, however, Wildeblood not only remained in Britain after his prison term, but also campaigned for legal change, publishing his civil rights-agitating-cum-prison memoir, Against the Law (1955), and providing evidence to the Wolfenden committee.
