Book Description

First edition. Octavo, pp xii, 265. Illustrated with six chromolithograph plates, 12 albumen print photos pasted onto card, two maps of which one is a folding map titled ‘Part of British Burmah’, and 19 further sketches, woodcuts etc. Bound in publisher’s green cloth covered hard boards with gilt lettering to the spine and upper board and very attractive gilt and black decoration to the upper board. Previous owner’s name, ‘A. Woodford’, to the top of the title page. Surgeon-General Sir Charles Alexander Gordon (1821-1899) travelled to Burma from December 1874 until February 1875, accompanying Lt. Gen F.P. Haines, commander-in-chief of the Madras Army, on a tour of the country. The first half of this book comprises Gordon’s diary of his travels, the second half is Gordon’s notes on the country more generally including the people, government, history, climate, trade, etc. This journey was undertaken shortly before the Third Anglo-Burmese War broke out in November 1875. Gordon authored many books, most regarding matters of tropical disease and medicines, and later became Hon Physician to Queen Victoria. The albumen prints within this book are all in excellent condition and are sharp with excellent contrast and tonal range. They are backed on cream card, captions printed below each image, versos blank. Although the photographer of each image is not identified, within the preface, Gordon notes that some of the photographs are from the Studios of Messrs. Jackson, Shephard and Bourne; and Nicholas and Company. These early images are a highlight of this book. The book is clean within, no foxing or spotting, binding is a little tender, boards are bright and clean, spine a bit dust dulled. Overall an excellent copy of a scarce book.
