A Personal Narrative of Two Years’ Imprisonment in Burmah 1824-26

First edition. Octavo, pp xii, 327 + 32 pages of publisher’s ads at rear. Bound in the publisher’s green cloth covered hard boards, with gilt lettering to the spine and gilt decoration to the upper board, and with the original red endpapers. Illustrated with frontispiece and four further full page engravings and a small illustration to the title page. Two title pages. Henry Gouger (1799-1861) was an Anglo-Indian merchant who travelled to Ava in 1822 on business and was captured and interned during the First Anglo-Burmese War, 1824 to 1826. Written many years later, and shortly before he died, Gouger recollects here his experiences during those two years. In Very Good condition, binding solid, previous owner’s label (dated 1910) to the front endpaper and a small binder’s label to the rear pastedown. The front end-paper has missing top corner, some spotting to frontispiece, and edges. Overall in Very Good condition. Scarce.
