Burma under British Rule and Before

Book Description
Two volumes. First edition. Octavos, pp viii, 460 + viii, 452. Both volumes have a frontispiece photo plate illustration and two maps, the maps in Volume I are a folding plan of the Palace at Mandalay and a large colour map of the country by John Bartholomew. Volume I provides a history of Burma prior to and through the 19th century, a century of three Anglo-Burmese Wars, together with politics, law, administration, commerce, mineral reserves, etc.; Volume II addresses aspects of Burmese society, life, beliefs, culture, communications, etc. A comprehensive turn-of-century work of particular note for Nisbet’s writing on the pre-colonial period. The two books are clean and tightly bound. There is a previous owner’s ink name etc to the ffep of both volumes “F.J. Richard | Ootacamund | 2.8.20” . There is also much pencil underlining of the text through both volumes, a small amount of it in colour pencil. The spine cloth on both volumes is dust dulled and a little faded, Volume I has a split to the head of the spine and a bump to the lower front corner. Overall a Very Good set. Rather uncommon in commerce, we find no auction records.
